NAN: Language and Literacy Developmental Concerns

Like with any milestones, when children consistently miss language and literary developmental milestones parents and caregivers naturally become concerned. Nannies should report any concerns about a child’s language and literacy developments to the parents who should in turn share the observations with the child’s pediatrician who can provide an appropriate referral.

If parents are concerned bout their child’s speech and language development, they should see a speech-language pathologist certified by The Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and AudiologistsThe speech-language pathologist can administer tests of receptive and expressive language, analyze a child’s utterances in various situations, determine factors that may be slowing down language development, and counsel parents on the next steps to take.
