NAN: Positive Purposeful Praise in Discipline

Blanket phrases of praise like “good girl” or “great job” can have negative effects on children because they’ll come to associate their value with their performance. Positive, purposeful praise focused on effort rather than outcome, however, can be used to guide children towards developing the intrinsic feeling of being satisfied with a job well done.

Guiding behavior by using phrases like “Look, you got your shoes on by yourself!” with an energetic tone or “I really like how you shared your truck” is much more meaningful to a child than a blanket statement of praise like “good boy” and will help a child to self-direct and have self-control all while boosting his self-esteem.
