Reading should play an important part in a preschooler’s day. By reading and rereading favorite books, reading rhyming books and using stories to introduce new words, nannies can encourage reading in preschoolers.
When reading to preschoolers, point out letters, numbers and illustrations and run your finger along the print as you read aloud. By asking questions about the characters and plot of the book and by asking the preschooler what he’d do if he was in the character’s situation can help to build literacy skills. While some preschoolers will sit and attentively listen to stories other will move about as they listen and interrupt the nanny to ask questions or make comments about the story.
