Misconception: Children are Resilient, They’ll Be Fine

Reality: Every child is different – some will definitely cope better than others, but they will all go through grief in their own way. It’s important to check in with the children, asking how are feeling and letting them know feelings are natural. You can do this by sharing and modeling your own feelings, and letting them know it’s okay to express their emotions. You can do this by engaging older children in conversation by asking them how they coping at school. For example, “How are you feeling about going to school each day?” or by asking a younger preschool child “How do you feel when daddy goes to work?”
