Misconception: Support Should Only Come from the Family

Reality: As an external caregiver, you may face this attitude from some family members. Remind them that you aren’t replacing anyone – you’re just there to help out. Let them know that sometimes children try to protect their parents from pain or anxiety and therefore won’t share their feelings with them – but they may open up to someone else. Plus, adults in the family are likely going through their own stress and grief and it can be helpful to have a professional volunteer come in and take the pressure off them.
